Tom Hayes

Tom Hayes is managing director of EIRI Associates, a Brussels-based consultancy specialising in European employee relations issues which is affiliated with McGuiness & Yager LLP. He has been involved in industrial relations since 1972 (in Ireland), first as a trade union official and then as a personnel director. In 1983, he began to work as an industrial relations and training consultant. In the early 1990s, the scope of the consultancy was expanded to take in European issues. He has a BA from University College Dublin in History and Politics.

Mr. Hayes has been deeply involved with European Works Councils since the early 1990s. He has assisted in the negotiation of EWC agreements in such companies as Burmah-Castrol, Nortel Networks, Hilton plc, American Express, UCI, BAA, Northern Foods, Newell-Rubbermaid, Avery Dennison and The British Council.

As well as the above companies Mr. Hayes also works with Alliance Boots, Hewlett Packard, Sheffield Hallam University, Intel, Land Securities, PaddyPower, United Technologies and Airbus Industrie.

From 1992 to 2000 he acted as industrial relations adviser to the Irish regional newspaper industry, negotiating major contracts on behalf of the industry with its labour unions.

Mr. Hayes lectured for several years on European industrial relations in the National College of Industrial Relations in Dublin and has been a guest lecturer in University College, Dublin, Galway University, Nottingham Trent University and Leicester University.

He is the co-editor of Practical Employment Law, a guide to Irish labour law and is co-author of Dismissal Law in Ireland.

As well as the above other current projects include:

  • Expert involvement in an EU-funded study on “best practice” corporate restructuring in the 15 “old” member states of the EU; and
  • Expert involvement in an EU-funded study on restructuring in the public sector
